Grassy Meadows is a small farm owned and operated by the Doyle family. It is located in the rolling hills of the Pine Creek area, just 30km south west of Bundaberg, Queensland.
Robert and Mellisa Doyle run the property with their five children. Our children are becoming an integral part of the farm, with the older children now being able to help out with some of the chores. We purchased our property in 2005 and started our Farm Gate operation in 2008.
The farm has a mixture of livestock including a small herd of cattle, some pigs, a few chooks, 2 dogs, a cat and ‘Holly’ the horse. All animals have a role to play, from growing food, through to keeping a watchful eye on things.
‘Sally’ the sow is the traditional Large White Land Race cross pig and generally has 2 litters of piglets each year.
The cows are predominantly European and British breeds including a mixture of dairy crosses. We use a different bull each season and to reduce the need for sprays we try and choose tropically adapted bulls. Over the recent years these have included Tuli and Senepol bulls. This season we have a Basadais bull looking after our girls.
Our cattle graze on natural pastures and our happy pigs are fed with a mix of grains, as well as foraging in their paddocks.
The meat however, is only one of the many components families receive when they purchase a package from us. All packages come with a little bit of information about the animals life. All customers are welcome to attend our annual Farm Open Day, held in autumn each year. And of course knowing the farmer who grew your food you can be assured it is fresh and free of artificial hormones.
